Asbestos related diseases are now recognised as a major cause of occupational disease in the UK. As a result the Health and Safety Commission introduced a national register of all commercial and industrial buidlings containing asbestos, aiming to control the exposure to asbestos fibres, particularly to maintenance and repair workers.

Under the current proposals, anyone who owns or has responsibility for a building which serves as a place of work will have certain duties imposed to prevent any individuals being exposed to asbestos. Surveys for asbestos will have to be carried out and records of the exact locations to be kept.
